Magic lighters?

So I noticed that when clicking the known recipes for a large fire, it will add an empty lighter to the combination and still create a fire with no fluid needed.  Unfortunately I haven't tested to see if it works automatically with small fires or if you can do it manually with either fire.  I just got one hit killed by a dang dogman 2 hexes away from The Glow :/  Will test once I find another lighter in a new game.

Do you have another lighter in your pack that has fluid?  Perhaps it's just taking the fluid from another lighter?  Or maybe you're just assumed to be so good that all you need is the spark and not a sustained flame.

I'm definitely seeing some weirdness in the campfire quick recipe button, like you're describing. Not sure what yet, but it's weird :) Looks like it empties the lighter onto the ground, uses the empty lighter, and the recipe still works. That's a bug, and it's on my list now!

Oh, and sorry about the dogman :)

I got some interesting effects with lighters and the fire recipes, too. When trying to use the recipe it will properly create a fire and a lighter with one use less than before. But at the same time one unit of lighter fluid is created on the ground...Happened numerous times and only when using recipes, not while trying to start fire manually.

I can second having seen the same behavior as 2nd Pete

Thirded, in the demo.  Not sure of how much fluid is used up, but definitely, when lighting a campfire from the recipe (rather than manually placing items in the crafting box) a drop of lighter fluid appears on the ground... also, what order are lighters chosen if you use the recipe?  I sometimes have mulitple lighters (all but one at 100% and full) and I would like to use my "damaged" lighter until it runs out.

Also happens in the beta, and as far as I saw it always happens - the only way to lose the ability to make fire is by wearing out your lighter or by forgetting it at a camp sight... (happened to me the second time already... argh...)

I think that last moved or picked lighter get used first, although i  may be not correct.

I know that with cooking pots, it will cycle through them until each one has been used (discovered when boiling water).  Probably if you have multiple lighters it will cycle through them all eventually (if you start enough fires).

Hey Guys!Yesterdays builds (0.915d and 0.925b) should solve the "magic lighter" issue. Quick recipe buttons were emptying item charges onto the ground, which was related to a fix for crafting destroying things like bullets when upgrading the gun.The latest build should keep the charges inside items like lighters, but remove charges like bullets, before crafting. As for order of preference when using quick recipes (or any automated item transfers), the game generally tries looking for items in equipment slots first (i.e. on the body), then the hands, then the ground. Within an individual container, items are chosen on a first-in, first-out basis. So if you have two lighters in a backpack, the first one added to the backpack is used first. I may be able to reverse this at some point, so last-in is first-out. It would make items get used in a more realistic way. I'll make a note of that for the future. In the meantime, you can try placing items you prefer to use in the backpack slot, and duplicates in hand containers. Most automated processes will go for the backpack first.Hope this helps!

That's actually not a bad work-around.  I already sort of put my "immediately valuable" items in the backpack backpack and then the "surplus/trade goods/good to have goods" in the hand held backpack.
