"how to install a mod" vid FOR NOOBS

New players, I'm going to make another vid on how to install mods. I want to know what is/ or was hard for you to understand or figure out while learning how to do this.

Just give me specific ideas on what you need answered in such a video. Later i'll make another merging video.

A couple thoughts I had watching the old video:

what's the difference between an override mod folder and a regular mod folder?

Why does load order make a difference and has that changed recently? I ask because, for example, MMoD Kaaven says this is suggested load order:

nRows=7 &strModName0=FoD&strModURL0=FieldsofDead &strModName1=0&strModURL1=FieldsZero &strModName2=SP&strModURL2=SagesPages &strModName3=BBC&strModURL3=BigBadCheater/New &strModName4=0&strModURL4=BigBadCheater/Over &strModName5=MoD&strModURL5=M(m)MoD &strModName6=0&strModURL6=MoDZero

And it doesn't work, locks up on game start. If I put BBC at the end like so

nRows=7 &strModName0=FoD&strModURL0=FieldsofDead &strModName1=0&strModURL1=FieldsZero &strModName2=SP&strModURL2=SagesPages &strModName3=MoD&strModURL3=M(m)MoD &strModName4=0&strModURL4=MoDZero &strModName5=BBC&strModURL5=BigBadCheater/New &strModName6=0&strModURL6=BigBadCheater/Over

It works. But in your video it says it shouldn't work if override folders aren't loaded last?

When I dipped my toe into merging encounters, like, encounter ID 40 in MMoD is a scavenging thing, but in another mod encounter ID 40 was something totally different, like an NPC encounter. How would you merge that? Just delete one?

Hey, before i answer...

thats not how it looks in your .php file right?

Nope, just goofed copynpasting the code I think

1) an override folder might be easier to understand if i just call it an vanilla overwrite file. These overrides edit existing game code. the "regular" mod folder might have a better name of "expansion" folder because it adds entirely new items/code to the game. One folder edits vanilla items, and the other makes new items.

2) No the load order hasn't changed recently; however, I did learn that the overrides don't "have" to be segemented to the bottom. Again though, the overrides should still be BELOW or otherwise load after the expansion mods that depend on them. So just don't load FieldsZero before you load FieldsofDead and you should be fine.

3)the suggested load order kaaven gave you does work, but you need to remove the invisible "spaces" highlighted here:

4)
"It works. But in your video it says it shouldn't work if override folders aren't loaded last?"

again, i learned that they do need to be loaded last, but only as long as they load after the mods that use them. so something like this:

&strModName0=FoD&strModURL0=FieldsofDead &strModName1=0&strModURL1=FieldsZero &strModName2=SP&strModURL2=SagesPages &strModName3=MoD&strModURL3=M(m)MoD &strModName4=0&strModURL4=MoDZero

will work but this:

&strModName0=0&strModURL0=FieldsZero &strModName1=FoD&strModURL1=FieldsofDead &strModName2=SP&strModURL2=SagesPages &strModName3=MoD&strModURL3=M(m)MoD &strModName4=0&strModURL4=MoDZero

might not only fail to load, but if it does load, could cause other serious problems.

update: i tried this out and it worked. this bothers me because on my Devkit mod the load order sometimes kept my mod from working as intended. so i will be sticking with this new rule.

5) Are these in the vanilla override or the expansion xml sheet?

"5) Are these in the vanilla override or the expansion xml sheet?"

In the xml files that came with the mods

is that the 0 folder that the encounters are in?

I think so yeah

which two mods are you talking about, and which folders are they? i'll take a close look at it before i tell you something wrong.

Pretty sure it was NSE and MMoD. It was pretty late though, and I had looked at a few different mods.

also, if you like reading things...this is what i have so far on the vids.
