New Blue Bottle Games Website

Hey Folks!

First of all, I apologize for the long delay in getting the site running again. I've been delaying a major CMS upgrade for a while because of the potential for long downtime, and figured I could wait until announcing either the mobile NEO Scavenger or new space game officially. However, reality doesn't always wait for convenience, so I was forced to just get it over with and upgrade to the new CMS.

So, we have a new site now! And as with anything, there are some pros and cons.

  • Profile Pictures - Unfortunately, I wasn't able to keep the profile pictures in the upgrade. I managed to keep user IDs intact, but the pictures were a casualty of the new system. You'll have to re-upload your if you want one.
  • URLs - All old URLs should continue to work, thankfully. It was a tricky task, but I was able to maintain old node IDs in the new site, so off-site links shouldn't break. (I.e. links to forum posts, articles, news, purchase page, etc.)
  • Private Messages - These are gone. However, each user should now have a "contact page" that allows other users to get in touch. It's basically a contact form that hides your real email address, but sends you an email behind the scenes if someone messages you. Also, you can turn this feature off in your My Account page.
  • Comment Notify - Similarly, forum thread notification emails no longer exist. I'm unsure if I can restore this feature or not. For now, you'll have to manually check-in to see if a thread has updated.
  • Search - Since it's a new website, it needs a bit of "cooking" time to get the search index back to normal. So you may find some searches unexpectedly returning no results. This will get better over time as the server chugs through the backlog of content.
  • Desura Connect - I had to disable this temporarily until I could rebuilt it for the new site.
  • NEO Scavenger Direct Buy - Similarly, I had to disable purchasing the game here until I figure out a new solution. I still have links to Steam, GOG, and Coinplay product pages, however.
  • BBCode - I managed to get some extra BBCode tags for free with the upgrade. You'll now be able to (I think) embed YouTube videos, use abbreviations and acronyms, apply table formatting, and other things.
  • CAPTCHA - I've upgraded the CAPTCHA to be a simple 4-digit code you must type in using a mouse keypad, instead of the old letter/number image recognition.

Also, there could be other things I've missed. If you notice anything broken, definitely let me know. It could be that I haven't upgraded it yet, but it may also be due to my missing it.

Hopefully, the new site will be a step forward in most ways. And more to the point, hopefully this means I can get back to what I really want to be doing: making games!

The new layout is nice! I just hope I can re-program my brain to those links, I usually start my Bluebottlegames adventure in the forums thread, which hasn't moved a considerable amount, but it would suck if I opened the wiki.

Rar! Rar rar rar! Thanks for reading :)

i have plenty more suggestions coming if you want them. one of which is i wish the "background" of the signature area could be a different shade from the rest of the post so i know when the post end and the sig starts. if that's not possible, then a clean like seperating them. the 'hr' tag isn't great because that doesn't help me differentiate other peoples sigs

It seems like the forums have lost about a week or more worth of posts...any chance of getting those back or are they gone for good?

Edit:
I'm also not a big fan of how the forum threads display themselves now. Having the OP always at the top of each page of the thread is incredibly cumbersome and having to scroll to the bottom of the page to get the page controls is even worse...is there any way to not always display the OP and add a 2nd set of page controls to the top of the page as well?

And there's no more 'Mark All Read' button anymore...I'm gonna miss that little thing...

Having a background in web development I can imagine how arduous and seemingly counterproductive this task must have been. I'm not very familiar with how your forums work, but I must admit I'd probably just say "screw it" and went with human-readable and SEO-friendly URLs, maybe with implicit 301 redirects for the most often used links.

Thanks, guys! Some good feedback and suggestions here. I'm not sure how many of them are possible, but I'll start digging into them and see.

@Rovlad, yeah, I almost said "screw it," too. But there was just this hint that it could be done, and I couldn't let it go :)

So do you hate Drupal with burning passion already? :) I was pretty sure you'd totally bail from it in favor of something else. But it was mostly because of forums, right?
Ah, whatever. On to what's hopefully a new game from you.

these post were blue a few days ago weren't they?

why do some post have the profile picture on the left and others on the right?

in fact why are some post grey in the background and others blue?

thoughts:
1)i like the new look of the pictures on the right just like in this thread and at the top. i think
it makes it look like theirs much more room for the words in the chat box even though that doesn't matter. so i guess i'm saying it looks cleaner or simpler

2)i like the blue more than the gray background. the sigs look nice

is it possible to highlight which comments in a thread are unread? like make their background a different color?

the way replying to a comment worked on the previous site (dunno if it's still true) was that if you replied to a comment the reply stays with the page position of the original comment. makes it a little harder to tell which comment is new when theirs hundreds of them like on the major mods

1)it seems you added a "new" red text to the right side of unread post, however it seems to only happen on this thread (and maybe new threads only)

for example, i don't see it on new post for the NeoScavengerExtended thread

update: ah i see the very small "(new)" right next to the time stamp on the threads. ok nevermind then

2) the comments made with the new webpage have a title it seems, but i don't see anything to control what that title says in the comment box below.

maybe comments shouldn't have a title, because it just repeats the first line of whatever the post is talking about

update: it seems it's only this thread that looks like this so disregard #2 i guess

3) good work though

i noticed that sometimes there is a (new) next to the timestamp in one of the modder threads, when it seems inconsistent. i went to an unread post today and it wasn't there
