"Regenerated Gas Mask Cartridge" Recipe Idea

I always found weird how common (spent) gas mask cartridges are, and yet and no way exist to recycle them. But, I also lack knowledge in chemistry, so no need get angry for what I am about to propose.

The recipe would consist on:

- 1 "spent" gas mask cartridge (obviously) ;
- multitool (to disassemble the cartridge) ;
- Medic skill (as it is basically considered "chemistry") ;
- 1 heat source;
- 1 large fireproof container (or Metal Sauce Pan) ;
- 3 droplets of sterilized water (not only to make it costly, but to absorb as much waste as possible) ;
- and 1 (or more) water purification tablet.

This recipe, other than making the medic skill and water purification tablets, more "worth taking", would also craft a pretty rare item, extremely useful to loot the black swamp tiles.

The regenerated cartridge though, should have at least two thirds the durability of a pristine one, if not half (achievable by increasing accordingly the degradation rate).
It should also leave no "spent" cartridge after being completely used (can't keep regenerating the same cartridge over and over again).

To make it clear, the procedure would involve to dunk the filtering material into enough boiling water and disinfecting substance to recover at least part of its properties.

Said that, if anyone more versed in the art of "alchemy", think my idea is not really feasible, or it could be even more so with the addition of some other (already present in vanilla game) chemical, then let it known in here. Any feedback would be greatly apprecciated ;) .

Gas mask filters are basically "clean" and probably work on a principle of carbon filtration; it is not really realistic to "clean" them in the field that I can think of any more than you can clean spent ammunition.

actually gas mask cartridges are easy to replenish, they work on a pulverized charcoal system in most cases or an ozmydic foam system, with the ozmydic foam system you can run sterilized water through in reverse followed by alcohol then water again to clean it out, it will be as good as new, the charcoal filter needs only chard wood to be ground into a dust then compacted into the case, charcoal needs to be kept dry (good for deserts and forests usually) foam needs to be kept wet with sterilized water (best for swamps and ocean type areas), both work well, both last much longer than this game seems to think, third option is to use cloth and alcohol in a closed can and heat until it turns into a fiber often used for fuses, it also works well as a filter if compacted but needs to be fully replaced though it lasts about 3 times as long before being ruined, i have done all 3 methods IRL as well as used needle ash filters [pine needles heated without air until the acid boils in them and processes the needles (lasts very little time but very effective and smells nice)] other methods include using sterilized water mixed with alcohol to make a kind of bong like filter system (lasts very long without maintenance but can get infected or spilled easily either of which make it useless)

how long does it take the alchohol and cloth to turn into a fiber? i think ill use option 3 in my mod and you think i should put soup can as a requirement?

as in a suace pan will not do? will whiskey do?

and does this kind of filter have a name?

alternately you could use a lighter, water purification tablets, metal, and create an "air cooker" filtration system, can burn you but cleans all air and only runs out due to fuel

Damn, Infinitetech

I tip my nonexistent top hat to you, sir. That's exactly the kind of knowledge I was looking for.

Judging by what you wrote, different solutions could be applied, so now the real issue is to decide which one is the most proper.

Considering the game location, both geographical and temporal, I would say that foam you mentioned should be the most probable to be used, so the original recipe I posted should only need to have the "heat source" replaced with a portion of alcohol.

I'll do some more research, though and thanks for your answer.

no problem, probably could add some of the ash you get from dying fires as well just to make it a tiny bit more of a cost thing, or something haha, though i guess you cant make moonshine yet can you? too bad, if i was actually in the scenario myself i most likely would use the charcoal method as charcoal also can be used as lubricant, wound sterilizer, a cauterizer, food additive, or many alchemic/explosive purposes haha, but then most people know very little of how to make such things these days, glad i could help!!

I think I could whip something out for this. I've taken to modding lately and it's been fun. Maybe use whisky as a crude source of alcohol? Any suggestions as to which skill(s) would be used for crafting?
Infinitetech, how long would it take to clean the foam using water-alcohol-water? Is is fast enough that it could be done in a single crafting, or would we have to wait for the liquids to sip through?

Cheers

Lizardsoul, with your permission I would like to add your suggestion to my modpack, with credits to infinitetech for his knowledge in the matter.
