NEO Scavenger Is Officially Launched!

Hey Folks!

NEO Scavenger has officially launched! After almost four years of development, nearly three of which were in Beta/Early Access, it's finally time for the big v1.0!

NEO Scavenger is my first commercially released game, and is a sort of love letter to the pen and paper role-playing games I grew up playing. In it, the player takes on the role of a character who wakes up in a strange facility where the world has experienced some cataclysm. Using their wits and anything they can scavenge from their surroundings, they explore this strange wasteland, piecing together clues about their past.

It's a hard game, where the player must take care to think of everything from dressing appropriately to disinfecting wounds. The story will not come spoon-fed to you, and the game will not hold your hand. But for those who are persistent and clever, rewards and answers await!

NEO Scavenger is available at many of your favorite online retailers, including:

HUGE Thank You to the NEO Scavenger Community

I want to take a moment to say a heartfelt "thank you" to everyone who has helped me over the past several years. From friends and family to helpful community members, I've always had support and encouragement all around me. Plus, many of you have been providing excellent feedback and suggestions over the years to help make NEO Scavenger what it is today. If you fire up the game, do check out the "Credits" page to see many of the talented individuals who made this all possible.

Thank you!

What Are My Plans for Support, and What's Next?

I answer these and several other questions regarding future plans in more detail here. The short version is that I'll be focusing more on bug fixes and better modding support after launch, as well as looking into potential new projects. And, of course, probably a vacation :)

So please head on over to your website of choice and take a look! There's a free demo if you haven't tried it, to help you decide if it's right for you. And for those who were just waiting for the beta to end, it's finally time!

This is like the first time I post in the news section of this forum but I find this place good for me to say congratulations, Dan. Neo Scavenger is one of my favorites games not only because I like the gameplay a lot but also because reminds me of the games I used to play when I was in high school. I hope this game gets successful enough for us to see a second part one of these days! :3

Pew pew pew!

Congratulations! It's been a long ride indeed.

Almost makes me sad, it's like an end of an era...

Conrgats, you MADE IT! XD

I don't know how to say this, because 'great' gets thrown around so much these days, but this is a solidly good game that you made. :) It stands on its own feet, is comparable to other things but uniquely distinctive, and it has a ton of heart. And even its flaws are adorable, which as far as I'm concerned is the mark of greatness. ;) Being around for a while you were working up to today has been a joy. :D

May this be the start of all sorts of good things. :)

Congratulations on the culmination of four long years of work! May typos never slip past and blemish the work!

Speaking of which, I should do another proofing soon.

There better be more medical crap in the next game you make!!! In other news I'm so happy and amazed at this game. Its probably one of the best survival games I've played in a while. Its been a wonderful ride and look forward to seeing what you make.

Congratulations! I actually can't remember when I purchased NEO Scavenger a long, long time ago - long enough to have loved it, forgotten about it, rediscovered it..etc. Now that it's officially 1.0, I feel like many others here. The end of an era! I very much enjoyed the daily blog thing, what a fantastic insight into a dedicated man's project. Time to go fall in love all over again! And thank you.

Congrats on all the hard work. I hope the next games are as great as this one turned out to be.

Are you seriously going to leave all the water bottle/corna-cola/Whisky sprites like that?!

Cmon man it just looks so half-assed to allow water to appear as whisky in a bottle or whatever other combination.
It cant be too hard to open up MS paint and change the colours to display the appropriate liquid.

I understand "I can make a mod to fix it if I really have a problem with it" but that is such sloppy and disrespectful policy.
Little things like that just kill immersion and make it unnecessarily pain staking when going through your inventory to find the right bottle with the right liquid in your stash of 20 bottles of mixed contents. The number of times I've accidently drunken my alcohol stash when dehydrated.

But for the love of god leaving things like that ensures the game always seems half complete.

As someone who harped on about this over two years ago, while I really would love to see this "fixed" someday, I know it is NOT a simple fix. Container items have only two states "full" or "empty", and AFAIK cannot change sprite based on what is IN the container. Fixing this would require a fair bit of work, I imagine. Is it worth it? I think so, personally, because it can be game-breaking when you drink the wrong bottle just because they all look alike. Will it be fixed? Not so sure. I made and offered sprites for all the bottles and am working on a mod right now that's a workaround, but I can totally understand Dan leaving this off as it really only effects bottle items. This "issue" also explains why you can put two kinds of different liquids in the same container (if it can hold them) when you really shouldn't be able to, too.

Congratulations, Dan! I'm always really impressed when a single developer manages to pull off a game as great at this. It's a real achievement and one I'm hope you are very proud about. I can't wait to hear what your next project is going to be.

Hell yes! Congratulations on the launch and wishing you many sales.

Thanks everyone for the congrats and kind words! It's still kind of sinking in that the game's released. I'm so used to scrambling to fix bugs after a new version :)

Looks like I still have some fixing to do anyway, though they're mercifully more minor issues so far. Some crunchy bugs to squash when I get back from vacation!

@Jimbo, yep, I'm afraid the bottle sprites are there to stay. I think I discussed the "why" of this a while back, but you might've missed it. It's definitely not hard to draw the sprites for the bottles, as you point out. The trouble is making the game care which liquid is in a bottle. I'm not even sure a mod could fix it. Maybe next game!

re: bottle contents... here's my workaround. Not perfect, but better than making huge changes to the game engine at this stage.

Oh, and can I just say a huge THANK YOU, Dan, for the unexpected soundtrack... I might have missed something, but it was a great surprise to see that appear in my account here on BBG! Awesome!
