Tile Work and Plot Drafting
Today's been another day of focusing on content. I spent most of the morning working on some new tiles, which will be used in a future plot line. I'm starting to run out of room on my hex sheet, so I might have to do some reorganizing to accommodate more hex types.
I also did some brainstorming on encounter structure for one of the subplots in the game. It took some time to get my brain in gear, but by the end of the day, I was able to start producing ideas more frequently. I guess I've been in coding mode for too long.
Part of the brainstorming involves figuring out ways in which the player can approach problems with different tools and skills. I want to give a decent amount of lattitude, but I also don't want to write a million outcomes to every choice (I think the game engine would bog down if I didn't go insane first). So coming up with a handful of good, meaningful choices is a bit slow. I think it's worth it, though.
I also have to be careful not to make the choices too arbitrary. I guess players could just barrel through all options blindly, but I think it's more fun when they think of an option and the game offers it to them. And I have a tendency to think of fatal outcomes way too frequently, so that requires tempering. (I'm trying, honest!)
Unfortunately, there's little to show for it without spoiling the fun, so I guess I'll just have to settle for mysteriously talking about plot and other content. Sorry!
