Auto Save

You know with the game as it is AND also just for any game in general I think an Auto-Save feature would be a godsend, especially considering that you can't plan for every issue that might pop up. Say I'm really into the game and really far but I haven't been saving manually because of my full immersion into the game itself. Suddenly my power goes out and all my progress is gone. Or more accurately, some kind of conflict happens within the game and poof, the game crashes. All the time I've spent is then wasted.

Perhaps you could do something about that, say after X number of turns make an auto save. I know that my favorite roguelike already does something like this, Dungeons of Dredmor. Now granted there is more for avoiding people getting out of working around the difficulty but it's saved me before when they were still trying to get Dredmor steady.

TL;DR

I think NEOScavenger would benefit from an autosave feature.

Autosave would be good, but should be optional.

Well, if we consider toggling auto save on or off I think we should go even farther: maybe there could be a Scavenger Mode which is harder than normal? Or just add another difficulty levels, depending how people prefer to play.

Only problem with an auto-save is that they can tend to save when you DON'T want them to. "Oh crap, I forgot to pick that up. Guess I'll reload and... nooo! It saved already?!" I've just been cursing the PS3 game "The Last of Us" for auto-saving every few seconds like that!!!

re: always_toxic's points:

I've said before that I would love to see a choice of difficulties or "modes" later in development. Not now, when the game is still being built, but closer to a major Steam or whatever.

Multiple "games in progress" is a big one; even with "lose your save on death", it would be very nice to be able to have two or three games going at once.

"Hardcore/Classic" mode vs "Casual" mode: where "Casual" doesn't have permadeath! Maybe limit to only one save slot per character, perhaps, but it would be much more enjoyable for those who don't like to devote hours to a game only to lose everything on a dumb mistake. IMO, the game doesn't need more difficulty settings than that one option.

"Story" mode vs "Sandbox" mode: something I thought about since the DMC opened. Sandbox would be questless/story-less, and just focus on seeing how long you can survive. Story would involve the continuing plotlines Dan has been weaving into the game so far and beyond. Right now there's no reason for this, because you can just choose to ignore the story... but I can imagine trying to play a long story with no way to save and restore (imagine playing a Final Fantasy game in one life/playthrough!) will be pretty rough!

True, but that's autosave every few moments in a real time game, where as what I'm suggesting is an autosave every X number of turns.

Seeing as this isn't a real time game this should work, and if you want to make sure you have a checkpoint when you want it, a manual save works there.

This is more a feature that I see being used for those who drop in and play on and on. In games like sleeping dogs it just autosaves regularly, but I only manually save there when I end my session so for me, even if the autosaves don't save when I would really like them to, its still time I won't have lost.

*THIS* For the love of mercy!—implement a damn autosave-backup feature. I've recently just lost HOURS of game time because of the same god-fracking awful (Power-grid cut) misfortune!

Wow, over a year later and someone else agrees that an autosave feature would be useful. Like I said, just implement it as a 'save every X number of turns' and still have the option for a manual save. It'll help people out loads.
