New Beta and Demo Builds: Patch for latest resolution upgrade

I've just uploaded new beta (0.961b) and demo (0.961d) builds, with timestamps 2013/02/23 in the version number. Yesterday's update had a few critical bugs that are addressed in this build.

Beta and Demo Updates

Build 0.961 2013/02/23 includes the following changes:

  • Fixed a bug that caused scavenge button to be hidden.
  • Fixed a bug that caused items in some hexes to be scaled incorrectly when first entering them.
  • Fixed a bug that caused attackmode scaling issues when starting game.
  • Fixed a bug that caused equipped items to be duped during crafting.
  • Fixed a bug that caused items in nested containers to be drawn in wrong container after used in crafting.
  • Removed lighter fluid from game, since it was causing problems, but added little value to gameplay. Game just uses lighters now.

Hopefully, this should fix issues with scavenging and crafting as a result of the latest upgrades. Also, you'll notice that lighter fluid has disappeared. It was getting to the point where it caused lots of problems (confusing new players, and making crafting more tedious) without adding much benefit. And as some of you pointed out, we could probably get by ok without the torch recipe using lighter fluid :)

Let me know if you notice any other issues. I'll still be fixing bugs both new and old, but I wanted to get these fixes up asap since they were breaking the game for some.

Thank you for your patience, and hope you enjoy the new build!

Great work! Thanks, trying it out now.

But lighter fluid was one of the best ways to earn quick money :(

Hey man.
1) Sleeping pills are still not in scavenge loot tables, only their bottles are. They always contain antibiotics.
2) I've also noticed my FMJ ammo gradually disappearing from my jeans pocket the other day. I couldn't reproduce it tough, so probably one of them hard-as-hell to trace null pointer bugs; unless it's intentional, like they're degrading or I'm losing them or something. I think it stopped when I moved them to backpack, though.
3) Just bought the game, thank you for your hard work. :)

I know. The sleeping pills were going to be so helpful with running insomnia too. Now I can only buy them in DMC from that shady hospital.

Uh oh, I wonder if I duplicated the antibiotics pill bottle loot entry and forgot to change the pills? I'll check that out.

And the FMJ missing from the pocket sounds familiar. Another player reported the multitool doing the same thing, so there's something going on there. The running theory they had was that it happened during save/load, but it sounds a bit like yours happened in the same session. I'll check that out too.

Thanks for the heads-up, guys, and the encouragement!

Yes, FMJ ammo was definitely disappearing during the same session. I think I saved and reloaded my game once to check out if that would help with the issue (it didn't) and it kept happening after that, only stopping when I put the ammo in the backpack.

Dang. I was just getting used to hoarding lighter fluid into my bottles :(

Noooo! Not lighter fluid! *Please* don't get rid of this! Especially for what seems like such a minor reason.

I loved being able to fill up bottles with it, and I had *so* many hopes for it becoming an important crafting ingredient in the future when we'd finally get new recipes added.

I don't want to spend hours sorting my inventory, true, but this isn't some fast-paced FPS... I don't mind having to do a bit of work in crafting, emptying bottles, etc. IMO, it adds to the 'tone' and feel of the game.

I find it sad that when I complained about permadeath, many argued "but that's not an annoyance, that's part of the game design"... yet here we have elements being removed just because crafting/inventory management is a bit "fiddly"... something that *I* consider part of the game's design. Water needing to be emptied from bottles every time you want to boil it? Yeah, that's annoying. But it's realistic that if you want to use lighter fluid from a disposable lighter to soak a rag for a torch that you'd need to spend the time cracking them open and emptying it out first. I'd expected that eventually we'd be able to find bottles of lighter fluid for use in crafting torches, etc. which would make draining lighters an act of desperation rather than the norm, anyway.

If things like this are being removed, please... at least give us simple item/crafting modding so we can add some of this stuff back ourselves. Right now I'm feeling that the game I bought into is fast getting stripped away. :(

Re: lighter fluid, I agree that there are some cool ideas that could use it. However, it was causing a number of problems which I felt were piling up.

  • Crafting anything with fire was confusing for new players, and tedious for advanced players. When one is making a fire, they don't really handle the liquid, so it's not realistic nor intuitive.
  • The 1x1 droplets were usually hard to see, especially since they are gray in color and covered by a stack count frequently in the double digits.

I'm also not sure how realistic lighter fluid is in this scenario. Zippos are often said to have evaporation issues with their liquid fuel (often in a matter of days), so it's possible most lighters of this type would be empty by the time they're uncovered. And the butane style lighters use a liquefied gas, which I'm not certain one could transfer without special equipment.

That said, I don't think you're alone in wanting flammable liquids for the purposes of future crafting recipes. There may still be ways to include fuel-like items in the game for such purposes, without running afoul of the issues above.

Hopefully, we can find the right balance of realism vs. usability. It's a tricky mix to get right!

You simply can't drain cheap plastic lighters (which are those we're currently finding in the game, judging by item art) - liquified gas would evaporate the moment it'd be opened. Some of them (not all) can be refilled, but only by using special liquified gas containers. Transferring gas between two lighters would not be possible anyway.
I don't see the benefit of lighter fluid being in the game aside from crafting recipes, which I feel the game is better off using something else for, anyway.

Ah well. Maybe we could find something else that's nice and flammable? Like cooking oil?
