Announcing Ostranauts

Hey Folks!

I'd like to tell you about my latest game, Ostranauts.

Eight years ago, I began work on NEO Scavenger. And after five years of updates and ports, it was time to begin working on a new game. That game started as simply "space prototype," but has turned into quite a bit more.

So what is Ostranauts?

Well, if you have a minute, here's a teaser video:

Ostranauts Announcement Teaser

Ostranauts is a detailed simulation of owning and living aboard a spaceship, in a solar system where honest living is a slow death sentence. Set in the NEO Scavenger universe, where Earth has suffered cataclysmic collapse, the rest of the System lives on in a state of capitalistic dystopia.

Players will create their captain, build or customize their starting ship from the spoils of their career history, and find ways to keep their motley crew in line, fuel in their tanks, food on their plates, and the debt collectors at bay.

If this sounds interesting to you, you can learn more at the Ostranauts Steam page. Wishlisting it there will give me an idea how much interest there is in this game, and how much time I can spend on it.

And if you know anyone else who might dig this type of game, let them know! Spreading awareness is something everyone can do to help me continue to make games like this.

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to seeing the stories you create in Ostranauts!

PS: Is this a sequel to NEO Scavenger? Not directly. Think of it more as a parallel story involving different characters, but in the same universe. An official sequel, continuing Philip Kindred's adventure, is still on my wishlist of games to make.

Thanks, man! And it's too late for no pressure :)

But seriously, I want folks to be really satisfied with it once they get hands-on. So double effort from here on!

Congratulations on this huge step. I've been watching your news page for quite a long time, waiting for space prototype to come to fruition. NEO Scavenger really inspired me and it's one of the few games I always come back to. I've really enjoyed watching you develop Ostranauts over the years. Thank you for gifting us with this inside glance of the development process. I wish you huge success.

Thanks, Episcron! It's still a long way from playable, but it's encouragement from folks like you that keeps me going!

Ooooooohhhhh, a name!
I'm excited to see where the universe's lore extends to. I'm also interested in seeing what sorts of new mechanics are added by launch (I mean, with an atmosphere sim... there are definitely interesting prospects).
Best of luck on that double effort!

Rar! Rar rar rar! Thanks for reading :)

Congratulations on this milestone, dude!
Also neat to see that it's connected to the NeoScav world.
I'll definitely buy this as soon as it's available, best of luck going on!

hello and congratulations,
really excited to see this sequel in space at Neo Scavenger. but I am disappointed I see that it only planned for PC. Do you have a Mac version? if you need help financially for this version? thank you.

Well I've added it to my wish list and am officially looking forward to it! I mean, I was looking forward to it before, but now it just suddenly feels more certain now that it has a name, steam page, and vague release window. Can't wait!

Thanks, all! Good to see some familiar faces around the launch.

And yeah, giving it a name and official "Coming Soon" page on Steam makes it just one more step towards a real thing. The good news is that reception seems good so far, and I think it's worth doubling-down on it instead of backing off.

Re: Mac support, the main reason I'm saying Windows only at the moment is because I'm really unfamiliar with other platforms. Trying to help people solve OSX and Linux problems on NEO Scavenger was always scary for me, since I didn't have the first clue what I was doing there. It was sheer luck I fixed any non-Windows problems.

That said, I don't want to leave non-Windows fans in the cold, either. I'll have to figure out how hard it is with Unity, and go from there. In theory, it should be easy. But then again, that was true of Flash until it suddenly wasn't true.

I'm considering doing something where the official build is for Windows, but there are unofficial builds for OSX and Linux. And if I can fix issues for them, great! But that way, I'm not misleading anyone into thinking I have a cross-platform debugging team.
