Encounter Branch Writing
Today was mostly about writing. Specifically, working on one of the branches of the new encounter. Here's a look at what I'm talking about:
This branch gets triggered when the player has done certain things before arriving. As you can see, there's a fairly linear spine to this branch, with many nodes in a row. In a few places, you'll notice some "spurs" where the encounter branches and ends. These may be exits from the encounter entirely, or in rare cases, might mean the player is killed.
In other sections, the player can make a choice that radiates outward to one of several possibilities, and these collapse back to the main chain. Often times, this is because each option sets a different flag on the encounter for later.
Finally, there are two lone nodes in the lower left corner, unattached to anything. These represent two other paths that I want to setup for this encounter, which reveal other story items. It's possible that this first branch might lead to these others if the player makes certain choices. I'll have to see how it works out.
Also, for those reading yesterday, you'll notice that I finally decided where the illustration should appear. Roughly two-thirds of the way from left to right, just before the chain expands into a cluster, you'll notice greenish illustrations appearing in the top right corner of each node (as opposed to "blank" gray illustrations). At this point, the player finally sees what's going on.
There's still a lot to do, but at least I'm making progress on new content! And there's some interesting cultural lore already making an appearance in this branch, so lore-seekers should have some new content in the next build.
That's all for this week. Have a good weekend, all!
